Round 5 drew 2,035 applicants, of which 1,251 were adopted (an adoption rate of 61.4%).

Under this grant we are investing in equipment that lightens the work of washing, drying, folding and sorting at our linen supply factory in Adachi-ku, Tokyo, together with the software that runs it. Moving the sequencing decisions that people used to hold into software lets the same number of people process more work.

We do not treat automation as a way to employ fewer people. We move the heaviest work in this industry — night shifts and carrying heavy loads — to machines first, and put the capacity that frees up into throughput and into pay per person.

The subsidy amount will be fixed when the grant decision is issued.
